Srinagar, Feb 22: The family of Mohammad Afzal Guru Thursday took strong note of visit of some mainstream leaders to their house “in the garb of offering condolences.”
Afzal’s cousin Yasin Guru said, “One who swears by the constitution of India isn’t allowed to visit Shaheed Afzal Guru’s family. Some people are creating confusion by issuing statements on behalf of their party in order to malign the sacrifices of Shaheed Afzal. The family will never allow to do any politics on his name,” he said.
“Where were they (mainstream parties) when Punjab Assembly and Tamil Nadu Assembly passed resolutions to save the death penalty convicts. On behalf of Afzal sahib his lawyer had filed an application in the Supreme Court for his transfer to Srinagar jail from Tihar jail. But J&K government declined to take him here. Now how can same people come and offer condolences,” Yasin asked.
Asked to comment on MLA Langate Engineer Rashid’s proposal to move a resolution in Assembly to return the body of Afzal, he said, “When he (Rashid) visited our house we categorically told him that we aren’t with his politics. But as Muslims we couldn’t tell anybody to get out from our home.
