CHRISTCHURCH — At least 30 people are feared to be dead after gunmen with automatic weapons open fire at two mosques in Christchurch in New Zealand.
As per the details emerging from the local media, a man with a gun entered a mosque on Deans Ave in Christchurch at 01:40 PM. Another mosque in Linwood was attacked shortly afterwards.
At least 30 people are feared dead in the terrorist attack. Consequently, Civil Aviation Authority has declared Christchurch City a controlled air space.
All schools in Christchurch were placed on lockdown. Students were told that it was safe to go home just before 6 PM.
Office workers near the mosques are being warned to stay inside and keep away from windows. Police are warning people to stay indoors and to report any suspicious behaviour to 111.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has called the attacks “NZ’s darkest day” and a major crisis. A meeting between the Government’s top officials is under way.
