SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday announced Syed Tajamul Islam, a veteran journalist and political analyst, as its candidate for the Bandipora constituency in the upcoming 2024 elections.

As per the news agency CNS, the announcement was made by PDP President Mehbooba Mufti during a press conference at the party headquarters today.

Syed Tajamul Islam, who has joined the PDP along with his supporters, highlighted the significance of democracy as a contest of ideas, underscoring that opinions cannot be suppressed or controlled.

Islam drew attention to the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s commitment to free expression and respect for diverse viewpoints, values he embraces deeply.

With over two decades of experience in journalism, Tajmul expressed his alignment with PDP’s people-centric agenda, which he believes resonates with his own values.

“Politics should be judged not merely by the acquisition of power but by the pursuit of justice and the integrity of the principles that drive social progress,” Islam said.

He acknowledged the contributions of PDP and Mehbooba Mufti to the Baramulla district and expressed his intent to focus on revitalizing Bandipora in the forthcoming elections.

Mufti also lauded Islam’s intellectual and political acumen, anticipating that his involvement would bring a fresh perspective to the party.
