Raid at ‘Career Consultancy’ in Srinagar for duping youths

SRINAGAR — Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday raided ‘Career Consultancy’ in Karan Nagar Srinagar for duping students and grabbing their money for aspiring to pursue professional courses from institutions abroad or outside Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

Officials said a team of CIK Department headed by a DySP along with concerned police station raided the consultancy in Karan Nagar area of central Kashmir’s Srinagar district on Tuesday.

A police official said that acting on a complaint, the police raided Career Consultancy in Karan Nagar which is owned by Iqbal Ahmad Wani son of Ghulam Nabi Wani, a resident Gond Arjon area of Budgam district. He said that relevant records were seized for the purpose of the investigation.

The officer investigating the case has learnt that the proprietor of ‘Career Consultancy’ has duped many students and illegally grabbed a huge chunk of money from students. “Investigation of the case is in progress,” he added.

Numerous consultancies offer admissions to students in an entire gamut of professional institutions outside the State and even abroad against hefty fees, but there are no government regulations for the business. Over the last few years, Kashmir has witnessed a boom in career consultancies that most often set up offices in hotel rooms and lure students of Kashmir valley for admissions in different colleges and universities outside.

President of Coaching Centers Association Kashmir, G N War said that thousands of students move outside the Valley or State to pursue different courses in other States.

“We have informed the administration a number of times to set up a regulatory authority to monitor the functioning of consultancies but the government didn’t take any initiative in this regard till now,” a proprietor of Srinagar based consultancy said.
