SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir administration is all set to begin installing smart water metres in the valley by this year’s end to ensure ‘reasonable’ water use, according to the news agency KNO.

The project will be implemented by the Jal Shakti Department in a phased manner, with the first phase starting in the Srinagar district.

He said the commercial establishments in Srinagar would be covered first, followed by other categories. “We have already done the groundwork for the prestigious project and prepared a proposal. We are hopeful to get funds for the implementation process,” he said.

Kohli said it would take time to introduce the water metres, but the beginning has been made.

The chief engineer stated that they would soon decide on the duration and mode of payment for the billing process. “It can be monthly or quarterly, depending upon the feasibility and other factors. However, the final decision would be taken by the Jammu and Kashmir Water Regulatory Authority,” he said.
