POONCH — Station House Officer (SHO) of Rajouri Police Station was on Saturday allegedly manhandled by Army men on Mughal Road while people staged a protest, alleging that they are facing undue harassment while travelling along the road.

Reports reaching here said that SHO Rajouri Sameer Jillani was on Mughal Road when Army men deployed on Poshana Army check post and a police officer entered into a verbal duel.

“It has come to the fore that SHO has been manhandled to a greater extent,” police officials said. Wishing anonymity, they said that manhandling of the officer has created a wave of resentment among police cadres in Rajouri and Poonch who are demanding action as per law in this incident.

Senior officers of both Police and Army later rushed to the spot for further inquiry into the matter.

Meanwhile, Civil Society members including leaders from BJP, PDP, Congress and others and Block Development Council (BDC) Chairman from Sunderbani staged a protest in front of SP office Rajouri.

They said that people are facing undue harassment while travelling on Mughal Road and no one is bothered to act into it. “This is not a new incident but common man faces such incidents on a daily basis,” the protesters said.

Meanwhile, PDP in a tweet said that the blockade of the road has reached to the level that even a senior police officer has been manhandled, adding that families in Pir Panchal and Kashmir have got affected due to the blockade.

“Blockade of Mughal Road has reached such obnoxious levels that even a serving @JmuKmrPolice officer posted in Rajouri who was travelling to enquire about welfare of his mother in Srinagar was allegedly manhandled by the Army. Families in Pir Panchal & Kmr affected due to blockade,” PDP tweeted.
