JAMMU — A soldier was killed in a gunfight between security forces and militants on Thursday in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, security sources said.

Official sources said that a brief contact was established between security forces and militants when a search operation was launched on specific inputs about the movement of militants in the forest belt of Latti in Dudu-Basantgarh area of Udhampur.

The militants fired upon the search team and it was retaliated.

The White Knight Corps of Indian Army in a post on X said that based on specific intelligence, a joint operation with police was launched on Thursday in Basantgarh, Udhampur.

“Contact was established and a fierce firefight ensued. One of our bravehearts sustained grievous injuries in the initial exchange and later succumbed despite best medical efforts,” said an Army source.

The operation, however, is in progress.
