SOPORE — A gunfight has raged between militants and government forces in Warpora village of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday morning.

Official sources said that contingents of Army’s 22 RR, SOG Sopore and 177 and 179 Btn CRPF cordoned off Warpora village during wee hours.

As the forces intensified the searches, hiding militants in the area opened fire, leading to a gunfight which was going on when reports last came in. The Army has already rushed more reinforcement to the area, they said.

A police officer confirmed the encounter and said that the cordon was launched following specific inputs about the presence of militants in the village.

Sources said that two Jaish-e-Mohammad militants are believed to be trapped in the area.

Meanwhile, mobile internet service has been suspended in Sopore.
