SRINAGAR — The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Kashmir has filed a chargesheet against a Pulwama resident for allegedly forging the signature of the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir on a fake official communication addressed to the Anantnag police chief, officials said on Thursday.
The accused has been identified as Saqlain Mushtaq Dar, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Dar and a resident of Deeri in Pulwama district, officials said.
According to officials, the chargesheet was presented before the Court of Sub-Judge, Srinagar, in case FIR No. 29/2026, registered under Sections 204, 319(2), 336(2) and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The case relates to a forged communication purportedly addressed to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Anantnag, in which the sender allegedly impersonated the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
“The communication was prepared using a counterfeit official letterhead and forged signature and was intended to unlawfully influence the functioning of the Anantnag District Police Administration,” an official statement said.
Officials said the investigation found the allegations and evidence collected to substantiate the commission of offences under the relevant provisions of the BNS.
The investigation was accordingly concluded as “Proved” and the chargesheet was presented before the court for judicial determination, they added.
The general public has meanwhile been advised to remain vigilant against attempts involving the impersonation of public authorities and the fabrication or use of forged letters, documents, official letterheads and signatures.
People have also been urged to verify the authenticity of suspicious communications purportedly issued by government authorities or public officials and report such instances to the Economic Offences Wing of Crime Branch J&K.
Complaints or information can be brought to the notice of SSP EOW Srinagar Abdul Waheed Shah or communicated through the official email address provided by the Crime Branch.
