SRINAGAR — Two non-local militants and a minor boy were killed in Mir Mohalla Hajin on Friday.

A police spokesperson said that based on credible inputs about the presence of militants in Hajin area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, a cordon and search operation was launched by Police and security forces in the area. As the searches were going on, the hiding militants fired on the search party.

“Initially, the militants kept two civilians as hostage. However, police and security forces with the assistance of community members safely rescued one civilian Abdul Hameed – a 60-year old man. Another civilian – a 12-year old boy – Aatif Mir was kept hostage by the militants till the end and despite repeated requests by community members and police for his release, he was killed by the militants and could not be rescued from the clutches of militants,” said the police spokesperson.

He added that the militants then fired on the security forces who engaged them in an encounter after the civilians in the adjoining areas had been evacuated to safer places.

“In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. From the incriminating material recovered at the site of encounter, it is understood that the two killed militants were Pakistani nationals identified as Ali and Hubaib. As per the police records, both were affiliated with militant outfit LeT,” he said.

He added, “They were wanted by law for their complicity in a series of crimes including attacks on security force establishments and civilian atrocities. According to the police records, they were also responsible for conspiring and executing many attacks in the area.”

“Police has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter. Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the incriminating material recovered has been taken into case records for further investigation to probe their complicity in other terror cases,” he said.

Two militants were also killed in Kalantra Baramulla here in north Kashmir. Police said that one of the two killed militants has been identified as Aamir Rasool of Sopore and from the incriminating material recovered at the site of encounter, it is understood that the other killed militant is a Pakistani national.

According to the police records, both the killed militants were affiliated with militant outfit Jaish-e-Muhammad and were wanted by law for their complicity in a series of crimes including attack on security establishments.

“Arms and ammunition including AK-47 rifles were recovered from the site of encounter. All these materials have been taken in the case records for further investigation,” official said.

Police official added that the gunfight at Warpora Sopore is underway.

Meanwhile, the gunfight that erupted in Ratnipora Shopian resulted in the killing of two militants. As per reports, eight houses, two cowsheds and two private Horticulture sheds were also damaged.

The clashes near encounter site left over a dozen protesters injured. Reports said that nine persons suffered pellet injuries while one was hit by bullet in his neck.

The injured were shifted to a nearby health facility where from three of them – one with gunshot wound and two with pellet injuries – were shifted to SMHS hospital for specialized treatment.

Clashes broke out earlier today soon after a gunfight broke out in Gadhapora village of the district today morning in which at least one militant has been killed so far.
