Gunfight in Kashmir

BARAMULLA — A gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Gund Brath area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday morning.

Reports reaching here said that a joint team of Army’s 22RR and SOG Sopore launched a cordon and search operation in the area.

A senior police officer said that contact has been established with the hiding militants after forces encircled the area. He said that earlier the cordon-and-search operation in the area was launched following specific information about the presence of some militants.

Till this report was being filed, intermittent firing was going on.

Meanwhile, authorities suspended internet services in Sopore town as a precautionary measure in wake of the encounter.

Also, to prevent any law and order problem, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore Ashiq Hussain Lily has ordered closure of Degree College as a precautionary measure.
