SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir Home Department has notified 12 temporary sheds on the outskirts of Pantha Chowk in Srinagar as a temporary holding centre/camp for illegal migrants.
The notification, issued on September 30, 2026, authorises the sheds to be used for restricting the movement of illegal migrants and providing them temporary accommodation, according to the department.
The order cites clause (e) of sub-section (2) of Section 7 and Section 13 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, read with Ministry of Home Affairs Notification S.O. 3998(E) dated Sept. 1, 2025.
It states that the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir has notified the 12 sheds identified in the annexure to the order to function as a temporary holding centre/camp for persons defined as “illegal migrants” under Section 2(b) of the Citizenship Act, 1955.
The notification provides that illegal migrants detected by law enforcement agencies will be lodged at the holding centre.
It further directs that such persons remain physically available at the facility at all times to facilitate their expeditious deportation once travel documents are issued following due process of nationality verification.
The officer in charge of the holding centre has been tasked with maintaining requisite records, ensuring security and providing basic amenities to the persons lodged there.
The officer will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable statutory safeguards, according to the notification.
The move comes amid an ongoing exercise by the J&K administration to identify and take action concerning foreign nationals found to be staying in the Union Territory without valid documentation.
On Monday, authorities shifted around 150 Bangladeshi nationals from Jammu and Kashmir to West Bengal for onward deportation to Bangladesh following nationality verification, according to officials.
The notification provides a designated facility in Srinagar for persons detected during such enforcement exercises while arrangements for verification, documentation and deportation are completed.
