Leh highway blocked as landslide causes damage in Sonamarg

GANDERBAL — Srinagar-Leh National Highway was closed, while several houses and a cowshed were damaged due to a landslide in Rezin area of Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Sunday evening.

An official told the news agency KNO that the landslide triggered by heavy rainfall caused massive damage to houses and a cowshed and also blocked the Leh highway. He said that officials were assessing the situation and taking steps to provide assistance to the affected people.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the district administration said a landslide triggered at Rezin lead to blockage of the highway.

“Some houses have been damaged by the landslide, however, no loss of life or injury had been reported. The area has been cleared, and residents of the affected area have been moved to safer places,” reads the statement.

It reads that the rescue teams and senior officers are also present on the spot and monitoring the situation closely.
