SRINAGAR — Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Syed Abid Rasheed Shah Friday asked girls not to take extreme step as a girl did in “his district”, stating that girls facing harassment of any sort must contact police.

Posting on his Twitter handle, DC Pulwama wrote: “Yesterday, a girl took her life in my district because of someone uploading her pics on social media. If only she had raised a voice and not taken her life. For all the ladies out there, please don’t stay silent on harassment by anyone. It’s their shame not yours, contact the police.”

Day before the International Women’s Day, a 22-year-old girl in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district was impelled to kill herself after a youth allegedly posted her pictures on social media platform on Thursday. Police, however, was able to arrest the accused immediately.

Family of the deceased girl (name withheld) said that they found their daughter unconscious inside her room after she had poisoned herself. “We immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital from where she was sent to SMHS, Srinagar where she died,” the family said.

The girl, according to the family, was very much distressed after a youth had put her pictures on social media.

A police official said that they received a complaint from the parents of the deceased girl, saying their daughter was forced to commit suicide after her “objectionable pictures” were uploaded on social media. (KNO)
