Two JeM militants killed during gunfight in Shopian

SRINAGAR — A top commander among two Jaish-e-Mohammad militants were killed after an encounter broke out between militants and government forces in Memander area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday.

IGP Kashmir S P Pani confirmed that two Jaish militants have been killed in Memander and said it was a “clean operation without any collateral damage.”

Police said that one among them was a foreigner while another was a local identified as Suhail Nazir Mir son of Nazir Ahmad Mir resident of Saidapora Payeen, Shopian.

As per the police records, they were involved in conspiring and executing several attacks and were wanted by the law for their complicity in a series of crimes including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities, police said, adding that several crime cases were registered against them.

Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter and has been taken into case records to probe their complicity in other crimes.

“Police has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter,” the statement added.

Moreover, thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of a local Jaish militant. Amid pro-freedom sloganeering, the Jaish militant was laid to rest at his native village after multiple funeral prayers, eyewitnesses said. (With Inputs from GNS, KNO)
