It is imperative to mention that Kashmir is the Indian subcontinent’s northernmost geographical region. Until the mid-nineteenth century, “Kashmir” only referred to the Kashmir Valley, which lies between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range. Today, the word refers to the Indian-controlled areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, as well as the Pakistani-controlled territory of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Chinese-controlled territories of Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract.

The territory controlled by Pakistan is referred to as “Pakistan-occupied Kashmir” (“POK”) by the Indian government and Indian sources . The portion of Kashmir administered by India is referred to as “Indian-occupied Kashmir” (“IOK”) or “Indian-held Kashmir” (IHK) by the Pakistani government and Pakistani sources; neutral sources frequently use the terms “Indian-administered Kashmir” and “Pakistani-administered Kashmir” for the parts of the Kashmir region controlled by each country.
