It is imperative to mention that Kashmir is the Indian subcontinent’s northernmost geographical region. Until the mid-nineteenth century, “Kashmir” only referred to the Kashmir Valley, which lies between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range. The portion of Kashmir administered by India is referred to as “Indian-occupied Kashmir” (“IOK”) or “Indian-held Kashmir” (IHK) by the Pakistani government and Pakistani sources; neutral sources frequently use the terms “Indian-administered Kashmir” and “Pakistani-administered Kashmir” for the parts of the Kashmir region controlled by each country.
