Why books still matter in the digital age

A recent stroll through Lal Chowk in Srinagar turned into an awakening for me—an introduction to the enduring magic of books. Guided by a friend who shares a deep love for literature, I found myself surrounded by shelves adorned with books in Urdu, English, Arabic, and history—each one a silent yet powerful teacher.

Books, in their truest essence, are rivers of wisdom that shape lives, especially of students. They instill confidence, strength, and intellectual clarity across disciplines. More than just academic tools, books have been companions, motivators, and moral guides throughout human history.

It’s a universally acknowledged truth that books are gateways to knowledge. They not only inform but also inspire. A good book never misleads. Instead, it nurtures creativity, ignites imagination, and keeps readers anchored to the path of truth and understanding.

However, in recent years, we’ve witnessed a slow but steady drift away from the printed page. The first and most obvious reason is the overwhelming presence of smartphones in our daily lives. While digital devices offer convenience and access to e-books and PDFs, they rarely match the experience of holding a physical book, turning its pages, and soaking in its tactile pleasure.

Secondly, the sociopolitical disturbances around us have taken a toll on young minds. Many are drawn into distractions and chaos, losing the focus and serenity that reading books once offered. Books have traditionally provided comfort and clarity in uncertain times—yet that solace is increasingly ignored.

Lastly, the erosion of trust in the content of books may also be a factor. While books once focused on real-life struggles, values, and truths, a growing number now delve into themes disconnected from everyday realities, leading some to question their relevance.

Still, it is never too late to return to the enriching habit of reading. There is unmatched joy in living among books—their scent, texture, and presence offer a charm the digital realm cannot replicate. While the internet houses vast knowledge, the printed word holds a unique, irreplaceable space in our lives.

Let us reignite our bond with books. Let us become voracious readers again—not just for knowledge, but for the lasting gratification and quiet strength only a book can provide.
