DODA — Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Jammu and Kashmir president and Doda MLA Mehraj Malik was detained by Doda Police on Tuesday and produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court after a non-bailable warrant (NBW) was issued against him in connection with a pending criminal case, according to police and reports from the hearing.
Police clarified that Malik was not detained in any fresh case and that the action was taken solely to execute the court-issued non-bailable warrant, the reports said.
He was subsequently produced before the court, where proceedings in the matter continued. During the hearing, the court framed charges against the legislator in the old case, paving the way for further trial proceedings.
Security was tightened around the court complex as supporters and onlookers gathered during Malik’s appearance, according to the report.
The latest proceedings concern a pending criminal case. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court’s records also list criminal cases against Mehraj Din Malik before the Munsiff/JMIC, Gandoh, Doda.
Malik had earlier received relief from the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court in April 2026, when the court quashed his preventive detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and ordered his release if he was not required in any other case.
The High Court order, dated April 27, 2026, dealt specifically with Malik’s PSA detention and said the allegations in the underlying FIRs were matters for the ordinary legal process.
Malik won the Doda Assembly seat in the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir elections on an AAP ticket, securing 23,228 votes against BJP candidate Gajay Singh Rana’s 18,690. His margin of victory was 4,538 votes.
His victory gave the Aam Aadmi Party its first Assembly seat in Jammu and Kashmir.
The criminal proceedings in the pending case will now continue before the trial court.
