JAMMU — With LS elections just days away, the Congress party here today suffered a massive setback as senior leader and former State Vice President Sham Lal Sharma joined BJP in presence of BJP National Vice-President & J&K incharge Avinash Rai Khanna, State President Ravinder Raina and other senior leaders.

Sources in BJP said that Sham Lal Sharma will be elevated to an important position in the Bharatiya Janta Party in the coming days and it will be announced by the Bhartiya Janta Party National President Amit Shah in his rally in Sunderbani on April 03.

Sources also said that Congress too had offered Sham Lal an important post of working president, but he denied keeping in view the ‘sinking ship’ of Congress. “Definitely, Sharma’s joining BJP will make the party stronger in Jammu Division,” Avinash said.

Sharma is also brother of two-times Congress MP, Madan Lal Sharma.

Earlier, Sharma resigned from the post of Vice President of Congress last year as he charged the leadership of ignoring the core issues of Jammu and failed to strike a balance between all three regions of the state, including Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.

Two-times MLA, Sharma lost to BJP’s Rajiv Sharma in the Akhnoor Assembly seat by a margin of 9,380 votes in the last Assembly elections.
