Grand Mufti calls for micro-loans, collective action on social concerns

SRINAGAR — Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam on Tuesday called for collective efforts to address growing social and economic concerns in Kashmir, including the spread of drug abuse, and suggested facilitating micro-loans for economically weaker sections.

Addressing a meeting of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) J&K in Srinagar, Nasir-ul-Islam stressed the need for religious leadership and society to respond to emerging social challenges.

“If we won’t wake up now, then only Allah knows what will happen to Kashmir,” he said, while emphasising the need for timely intervention.

The Grand Mufti suggested that micro-loan facilities be made available to needy families and individuals so they could establish small sources of livelihood instead of remaining dependent on assistance.

He also expressed concern over drug abuse among Kashmiri youth and what he described as the involvement of young people in immoral activities. He specifically raised concerns about the vulnerability of girls and women to such social problems.

The meeting was attended by Ulema from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Jammu, Poonch, Rajouri, Kargil and Doda, who travelled to Srinagar for the one-day Ulema Meet and Seerat Conference organised by the MMU.

The gathering brought together religious scholars from different parts of the Union Territory and focused on religious, social and community-related concerns.

Participants also stressed collective responsibility in addressing challenges facing society and the need for unity and coordinated efforts among religious and community institutions.

The MMU has previously taken up issues including drug abuse and community welfare in its deliberations, according to the supplied material.

The latest meeting comes amid continuing concerns over substance abuse and other social challenges in Jammu and Kashmir.

Ulema from Jammu, Poonch, Rajouri, Kargil and Doda said their participation reflected a spirit of unity and shared responsibility in addressing religious and social issues affecting the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
