New Delhi: Priyanka Chopra-starrer biopic ‘Mary Kom’ has opened on a good note, with the Day 1 box office collections touching at least Rs 8.5 crore, making it the year’s 10th biggest opener.
‘Mary Kom’ accumulated a 60 per cent occupancy rate on the opening say. With the film being a solo Bollywood release with relatively no competition from other Hollywood releases, coupled with the fact that the audience has been eagerly awaiting the film’s release and that the movie is based on one of India’s leading sports personalities, ‘Mary Kom’ seems all set to dominate the box office over this weekend.
Releasing after last week’s slow performer ‘Raja Natwarlal’, this Friday’s release featuring Priyanka Chopra was highly anticipated. In fact, the film has received good reviews from critics across the board and also by people who saw it at special screenings.
Making a bio-pic especially on a sports icon has always been a challenge, but it was Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ that debunked the myth that sports based films have relatively low audience appeal.
This year’s two biggest openers have been Ajay Devgn’s ‘Singham Returns’ (Rs 32.09 crore) and Salman Khan’s ‘Kick’ (Rs 26.40 crore).
