PULWAMA — The residents of Gujarbasti Karewa Drabgam area in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district do not have access to clean water, posing a risk to their health amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The local residents allege that successive governments have failed to provide drinking water in the area. “We are forced to drink contaminated water as we have no source of drinking water,” says a local woman.

Another local in Gujarbasti Karewa Drabgam says, “We brought the issue into the notice of the concerned authorities but nothing has been been done so far,” adding, “Government is advising to maintain cleanliness but how can we do so with no access to clean water.”

“Recently, we went to Aglar village along with some PHE employees to repair the water supply pipe but the villagers are adamant. They beat us and didn’t allow the repair work. They are using water meant for drinking to irrigate their apple orchards,” the local said.

He added that they also registered a complaint at Police Station Rajpora but no action was taken in this connection.

They appealed the concerned authorities to look into it and resolve their problem on humanitarian basis.
