SRINAGAR — National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Monday condemned the alleged stone pelting incidents on some Islamic seminaries in Kishtwar, terming those involved as miscreants and devils, and urged the Centre to act firmly against hate-driven elements.

Responding to a question from media persons regarding the reported incidents, Farooq Abdullah said that such acts are carried out by disruptive forces. “There are miscreants and these devils will do their work,” he said, adding that such incidents threaten communal harmony.

He stressed that India is a secular country and it is the responsibility of the BJP-led Central government to ensure that this constitutional spirit is upheld. He said the Centre must impress upon state governments to strictly curb hate speech and prevent attacks on minorities. “It is the duty of the government to stop hate speech and ensure the safety of minorities,” he said.

Commenting on regional relations, Farooq Abdullah said that India desires friendly ties with Bangladesh. He expressed hope that the new government in Bangladesh and the Government of India would work in close cooperation. “We want friendship with Bangladesh and hope that cooperation between the two countries will lead to peace in the region,” he said.

Extending New Year wishes, the National Conference leader prayed for peace and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir. He also expressed hope that tourism in the region would receive a boost in the coming year, contributing to economic stability and employment opportunities.

Farooq Abdullah said peace, communal harmony and economic growth remain essential for the overall development of Jammu and Kashmir and expressed optimism that the New Year would bring positive change.
