SRINAGAR — Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday condemned Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma accusing the Congress leadership of frustration and Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Sat Sharma demanding an apology.

BJP legislators and party workers also staged a protest in Jammu against Kharge, raising slogans against the Congress and its president over the controversial statement made during an event in Patna on Sunday.

Kharge made the remark while addressing an event marking the 139th birth anniversary of Shri Krishna Singh, Bihar’s first chief minister. While criticising alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and accusing the BJP of undermining democratic processes, Kharge said the Congress would send those responsible for alleged irregularities to jail.

When an audience member interjected that Modi would not leave office, Kharge responded, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega,” triggering criticism from BJP leaders.

Reacting to the statement, Sunil Sharma, the Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, accused the Congress leadership of frustration and desperation.

Sharma said Kharge had used what he described as abusive and unconstitutional language against the prime minister. He alleged that the remark reflected the Congress party’s frustration and the desperation of Rahul Gandhi.

He said such language was not expected from a leader of Kharge’s seniority and accused the Congress president of exposing what he described as the party’s true nature.

Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Sat Sharma also condemned the remarks and demanded that Kharge withdraw his words and apologise to the people of the country.

Sat Sharma said elected representatives and leaders holding senior positions were expected to uphold the dignity of their offices and exercise responsibility in public discourse.

“I am not suggesting that they need to apologise to the Prime Minister or the Bharatiya Janata Party. Rather, they owe an apology to the 140 crore people of this country,” Sat Sharma said.

He argued that dragging the prime minister’s father into a political exchange was unacceptable and questioned what such language meant for the standards of public discourse.

BJP legislator Shagun Parihar also criticised Kharge’s remarks, saying her party was ashamed of the Congress over what she described as its mentality and its reference to the prime minister’s father.

The protesters accused the Congress leadership of crossing the bounds of political discourse and called for accountability over the language used by its president.

The controversy follows the wider political dispute over alleged electoral roll irregularities and the opposition’s criticism of the revision process. Kharge’s remarks have drawn a sharp response from BJP leaders, including demands for an apology and the withdrawal of his words.
