Srinagar: In a paradigm shift from its traditional policy Hurriyat Conference (M) on Tuesday decided to bring the economic and humanitarian aspects of the Kashmir issue to fore.
“The executive members of the amalgam who met here this morning unanimously agreed to highlight those facets of Kashmir issue which are commonly ignored,” said a Hurriyat leader.
“Executive Members during the meeting reiterated their resolve to continue struggle for the abiding and honorable settlement of Kashmir issue despite ongoing repressive tactics employed by the government including killing of innocent civilians and arrest of Hurriyat leaders,” the leader added.
Talking to Greater Kashmir after chairing the meeting of executive council, Chairman of Hurriyat (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said, “Hurriyat during all these years has been stressing on the need to address political aspect of the Kashmir issue. Time has come for us to move beyond it and bring to fore such issues which are vital for the survival of Kashmiris.” Mirwaiz said that amalgam has decided to highlight the economic, humanitarian, opening of traditional routes andother issues. “Water is the biggest treasure which Jammu and Kashmir has but its unabated loot is a cause of concern for all of us. The outside companies have built huge power projects on our rivers and are minting money. Just a small share is given to JK as royalty. We have decided to make the international community aware about the discrimination which Kashmiris face and the colonial mindset of New Delhi,” he added.
Mirwaiz said Kashmir Valley is virtually a “prison” as it is dependent on one single road i.e. Srinagar-Jammu highway. “Once this highway is blocked it threatens the very existence of people. We want to launch a campaign to ensure that traditional routes which connected Kashmir Valley with central Asia prior to 1947 are reopened,” he said.
Mirwaiz said the amalgam would highlight the “ongoing human rights violations” and the curbs imposed on the pro-freedom leaders. “We will make the international community aware about how the political space in JK has been choked and how peaceful protesters are dealt with. The incidents of innocents being killed on one or other pretext are a glaring proof of misuse of the unbridled powers delegated to the forces in the state,” he added.
The Hurriyat (M) Chairman said leaders of the amalgam in form of delegations would visit various embassies in New Delhi and foreign countries as a part of their campaign.
Mirwaiz said the disputed status of Kashmir issue could not be ignored. “The sooner the Kashmir issue is resolved through talks among all its parties, the better it is.”
Mirwaiz said the people of Kashmir are the real masters of their destiny. “Their involvement in talks is a must. Kashmiris will not accept any such situation or solution in which their status as real masters will be compromised,” he said.
Meanwhile, a spokesman of the amalgam said the meeting of the executive council was attended by Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, Aga Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi Al-Sufvi, Bilal Gani Lone, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Moulana Masroor Abass Ansari, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza and Muhammad Musadiq Adil.
