Soldier injured during gunfight in Rajouri

SRINAGAR — A soldier was injured in a gunfight with militants in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.

The gunfight started between militants and security forces in the higher reaches of Barote village this morning, they said.

They said that a joint team of Police and Army launched a cordon and search operation in the area after having a specific input about presence of some militants.

As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off a gunfight.

A senior police officer also confirmed the exchange of firing between the militants and security forces to GNS. Late in the afternoon, he said, a soldier identified as Jiwan Kumar of Army’s Elite 9 PARA was injured and provided treatment.

The searches in the area were underway as this report was being filed.
