COVID-19: For now, no closure of colleges in JK, Govt says

SRINAGAR — Amid rumours regarding closure of colleges following the surge in COVID-19 cases, the government on Thursday said that the higher education institutes in Jammu and Kashmir will function normally through regular mode.

Top officials of the Higher Education Department said that the students must not pay heed to the rumours regarding the closure of colleges.

The official said, “In Jammu and Kashmir, colleges are functioning normally even the management of all colleges are ensuring adherence of COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).”

“There is no such proposal of closing the colleges here and the Higher Education Department is constantly monitoring the COVID-19 cases among the students and the staff members,” the official said.

It is pertinent to mention that on March 15, at least three students of Women’s College Srinagar were tested positive for COVID-19 and on March 07, authorities ordered closure of Islamia College of Science and Commerce till March 13 following the outbreak of COVID-19 among its two faculty members.

The colleges in Kashmir started academic activities on February 15 after a gap of nearly 11 months.
