SRINAGAR — The University of Kashmir (KU) has decided to conduct the semester exams of all post-graduation students either on holidays or in the month of December to be decided by the respective head of the departments.

Interim Vice-Chancellor KU Prof Ali Muhammad Shah said that they have decided to conduct the PG level exams on holidays only if the students would be prepared.

“Many students have been affected by the floods. We have decided to take exams on their choice. If they are prepared for exams, then we will conduct exams on holidays and if they are not prepared, then exams will be conducted in December-January this year,” Shah said.

He added that in December, exams of both semesters would be taken. “First, second and third, fourth semester will be then taken jointly in December-January,” he added.

Shah said that most of the exams among 40 departments of KU were not conducted due to the September 7 floods.

Meanwhile, the University has already started second semester classes. “We started next semester’s classes so that precious time of students would not go waste,” Shah said.

Moreover, the valley’s higher education faced huge losses amounting to over Rs 100 crores and most of the colleges are still non-functional. Many KU affiliated colleges are still non-functional, particularly in Srinagar.

Minister for Higher Education, Muhammad Akbar Lone had earlier said that all of our colleges in Srinagar have been rendered non-functional.

According to a preliminary assessment of the government, the education sector has assessed the total loss of colleges and associated infrastructure above Rs 100 crores with 91 per cent damage to the Kashmir division.

In the meantime, the State’s Ministry of Higher Education has recently sent a note to the State Cabinet recommending postponing all examinations in institutions under its ambit from the existing October-November session to March-April.
