RAJOURI — An Army officer and a militant were killed after an encounter broke out between militants and the joint forces personnel in Thanamandi town of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

Defense sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that there was an exchange of fire between militants and joint forces after a massive cordon and search operation was launched by the joint forces in the forest area of Thanamandi in Rajouri district after the presence of militants was confirmed.

They said that a soldier and a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) sustained injuries in the initial exchange of fire who were shifted to hospital, where JCO Ram Singh succumbed to his injuries.

Slain JCO Subedar Ram Singh (46) belonged to Village-Salana of Uttarkhand. He is survived by his wife, son & daughter.

It is pertinent to mention here that a militant was reportedly also killed in the encounter. The search operation was underway till the filing of this report.

Notably, two militants were killed by joint forces in a gunfight in the same area on August 6 this month.
