Cheating in FDs worth lakhs surface in private bank in Jammu

JAMMU — Jammu Police have started an investigation in a bizarre incident of cheating in the Fixed Deposits (FDs) worth lakhs in one of the branches of a private bank here at Janipur.

Police on Tuesday said that a woman, who had two FDs in a private bank worth Rs 39 lakhs (Rs 25 lakh and Rs 14 lakh) has lodged a complaint at Police Station Janipur that the FDs are prematurely broken and the amount is withdrawn without her consent.

“A widow lady has lodged a complaint that two FDs worth Rs. 39 lakhs are broken and the money was withdrawn,” police said, adding that a case under FIR No. 91/2025 has been registered and investigation is underway.

Police added that during the initial investigation, the role of the complainant’s son, who is a banker in the same branch, has come to the fore.

“Her son is presently absconding,” police said and added that the matter of withdrawing another’s FD by committing fraud has also come to light during the investigation.

Police said, “As per the complainant, involvement of bank officials in the cheating case cannot be ruled out and taking cognizance of the allegations, a case has been registered under section 318 (2) of BNS, including the bank officials.”

“We are investigating the matter and a manhunt is launched to arrest the absconding son of the complainant,” said police.
