Srinagar: A case has been registered and probe is on into searches carried out by soldiers in Leh town of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region, as the army has no special powers in the area, police said Thursday.
Reacting to a media report that some army personnel had searched some hotels in Leh town two days back, a police statement issued here said: ‘Taking cognizance of a statement of defence spokesman and as quoted by a news agency, the police want to inform that there is no presence of militants in Leh.
‘The police is looking into the motives of the army personnel who searched some hotels in Leh during the intervening night of May 30 and 31, since the AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) is not in force in Leh. Police has registered an FIR following a complaint lodged with it.’
The AFSPA gives sweeping powers of search and arrest without any magisterial warrants to the security forces and is in force only in those parts of the state where the Disturbed Areas Act has been invoked by the state government.
