PULWAMA — Five people were bitten by stray dogs on Wednesday in Prichoo area of southern Kashmir’s Pulwama district, creating panic among the locals, especially children and elderly people.
As per details reaching here, five men were among the people who fell prey to the stray dogs, doubling the fears amid COVID-19 pandemic.
The victims have been identified as Rashid Ahmad (45), Ghulam Mohammad (60) and Ghulam Mohiuddin (50). Two non-locals have also been bitten in the area.
“The victims were shifted to hospitals but were advised to stay at their respective homes, after treatment with vaccines, due to the risk of novel coronavirus infection in hospitals,” Mohammad Shafi, a local vendor said.
Pertinently, a victim of a rabid dog bite is likely to suffer from hydrophobia – extreme fear of water, a symptom of rabies infection in humans.
Meanwhile, a local from Prichoo village said that two dogs have been killed so far after the rise in dog bite cases.
Zehran Ayoub, a local, said, “We fear to go outside as the stray dogs have created terror in the area. We request the authorities to help us out of this menace so that vulnerable people like children and elderly can feel safe.”
An alarming rise of dog-bite incidents is being reported across the southern district with a common complaint about non-seriousness of the authorities to mitigate the problem.
