Handcuffed teenagers appearing in annual exams

Srinagar: Teenagers in police custody for alleged stone throwing and disrupting peace during last year’s protests are nowadays appearing in annual examinations of 10th, 9th, 8th and 7th classes in valley.
Around 12 such students are appearing in examinations across Srinagar city at different examinations centers for different classes. These students are taken to examination centres in handcuffs.
Three teenagers are appearing in 7th class examination at Islamia High School and they are in police custody for the alleged stone throwing. They were identified as Fahad Ahmad, Sahil Ahmad and Rayees Ahmad.
Two boys identified as Muzamil Ahmad and Suhail Ahmad are appearing in 10th class examination and their centre has been established at Central Jail Srinagar. “There is a centre for two boys here. I do not know which case they are involved in but there are certain such examination centres where arrested boys are appearing in examinations. We are conducting their examinations under court orders,” a senior official of Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKBOSE) said on the basis of anonymity.
A boy from police station M R Gunj is also appearing in 7th class examination and at least two teenagers from the same police station have been sent to newly opened juvenile home located in Nishat. “One student is going for examination and some were sent to juvenile home,” said Station House Officer M R Gunj.
From the juvenile home three students are nowadays appearing in the examination of 8th and 10th class. Superintendent of juvenile home Nishat said a total number of eight teenagers are in their custody and five among them have been charged with stone throwing by police. Others are facing murder charges.
The superintendent, an official of state social welfare department, identified the teenagers appearing in the examination as Bilal Ahmad of class 8th, Fahad Showkat and Sahil Ahmad of class 10th.
He revealed that on September 23 this year, an orphanage of social welfare department was turned into a juvenile home and it is presently managed by the state social welfare department.“These students are being taken by police in their own vehicles to examination centers,” he said. “We are trying to give them every possible facility,” he added.
Police also admitted that some of the juveniles are in custody for stone throwing and other criminal charges. Deputy inspector general of police Central Kashmir A G Mir said some of teenagers were arrested for stone throwing and disruption of peace. “All of them have been sent to juvenile centre and might be appearing in examination on court orders,” he said but added that stone throwing is now at its lowest ebb.
