SHOPIAN — Inquiry has been started after a policeman allegedly thrashed an ambulance driver to pulp in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
The ambulance drivers from district Shopian staged a protest demanding registration of an FIR against guilty policeman and threatened to go for indefinite strike. However, due to the intervention of Medical Superintendent Shopian, Muhammad Ismail, the drivers after staging protest resumed their work.
MS Shopian said that one of their ambulance drivers was ruthlessly beaten by a policeman near a private school in Pulwama where he had gone to ferry a patient.
He said that the driver was unable to move after being beaten blue and black by the cop and was later shifted to hospital by him and other staff members.
The driver has been identified as Tariq Ahmed, driving an ambulance bearing registration number JK22 – 8441.
During the protest, the victim driver said that he was sent to Pulwama to bring a patient to Shopian. But on the way, he was stopped by police at a check-post at Lyceum School and beaten up without any justification.
“I recorded the whole scene and handed it to DSP as they blamed me of threatening the policeman. I also shared the recording with Deputy Commissioner Shopian,” he added.
“We have taken up this matter with higher authorities and demanded strict action against those involved in assaulting our driver,” MS Shopian said.
Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Choudhary Muhammad Yasin said that an inquiry has been started by his counterpart, Deputy Commissioner Pulwama into the incident.
