SRINAGAR — A militant has been killed in an ongoing encounter between security forces and militants in Aragam area of northern Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Monday.

A top police officer told the Srinagar-based news agency Kashmir Scroll that a militant has been killed by security forces in Aragam area.

He said that as the joint team of forces intensified searches towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering a gunfight.

In the gunfight, the officer said, a local militant affiliated with Lashkar-i-Taiba (LeT) has been killed by security forces. The slain militant has been identified as Umar Akbar Lone alias Jafer, son of Mohammad Akbar Lone from Wussankhui area of Pattan sub-district town of Baramulla.

As per sources, Umar Lone was a ‘Category-A’ militant who was active since April 2018 and was associated with LeT.
