SRINAGAR — International Mother’s Day which falls on 2nd Sunday of the month of May every year and is celebrated across many countries around the globe to pay tributes to the role of relentless struggle, efforts and role of a mother towards her children and society.
Many official and unofficial level functions used to mark the day in Kashmir as well but this year’s Mother’s Day which fell on 10th of May this year got unnoticed amid the prevailing coronavirus lockdown and curbs on the 2G internet services in erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir where no particular official or unofficial functions could be held in this regard.
However, if there would have not been curbs on the low speed 2G internet services in Kashmir, people would have expressed their tributes and views over the day on social networking sites and would have noticed the day in their homes as well.
It may not be out of place to mention here that on May 06, 2020, low speed 2G internet services got snapped across entire Kashmir when there was an encounter between government forces and militants at Beighpora village of Awantipora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district in which top most commander of the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen Riyaz Naikoo was killed along with his associate in a fierce gunbattle.
As soon as the news reports regarding Riyaz Naikoo being trapped in the CASO spread, the 2G services were snapped all of a sudden across entire Kashmir by the authorities to prevent any protests and to maintain law and order situation in the Valley.
The Mother’s Day got spoiled and resulted into the internet blockade in Kashmir.
