SHOPIAN — Locals from Pinjura village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday alleged that PHE Department on the directions of District Development Commissioner has snapped water supply to the village comprising of over 100 households.
They said that this has been done to punish them as villagers are not agreeing to share their water with other villages.
They also alleged that some young men from the village were arrested by police after they staged protest against water problem in the area. “We are being cowed down and threatened to maintain silence. We used to get water through a single pipeline but now authorities are mulling to provide water to other villages from the same pipeline. It will hit us badly and when we protested, water supply was snapped. From past one week, we are without drinking water,” the villagers said.
“When we approached PHE, the officials there categorically told us that water supply has been snapped on the direction of District Development Commissioner Shopian after the villagers refused to share their water with other villages,” they said.
A couple of days ago, locals from Pinjura village had held a protest against water scarcity outside the office of District Development Commissioner Shopian.
Despite repeated attempts, DDC Shopian Chowdary Yasin didn’t answer the phone calls.
