HANDWARA — Police have launched a hunt to track down a driver and his accomplice who allegedly tried to molest two school girls inside the vehicle in north Kashmir’s Handwara town.

Police Station Kralgund received information that two teenage girls had sought a lift from a private vehicle at Rasripora to go towards Watergam Handwara. “Once the girls boarded the vehicle, the driver and another person attempted to molest the girls, upon which they jumped off the vehicle at Rasripora.”

Locals told the news agency KNT that it was an i20 vehicle and the duo including the driver tried to molest the girls as soon as they boarded, however, both the girls raised hue and cry, forcing the driver to stop the vehicle after he hardly had cleared a distance of few meters.

“The incident occurred at a secluded place and there are no CCTV cameras,” said a police official, adding that an FIR vide number 33/2023 has been registered and efforts are on to nab the culprits.

Meanwhile, police have urged parents and guardians to counsel their children and wards to avoid taking or accepting lifts from strangers.
