Srinagar-Leh highway opens for essential supplies only

GANDERBAL — The strategic 434 km Srinagar-Leh highway re-opened today for essential supply vehicles.

Sources said, due to the shortage of petrol, diesel, vegetables and medicines in Kargil and Ladakh, vehicles laden with these supplies were allowed to ply on the road.

Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Fairoz Ahmad Khan said that vehicles will ply on particular days on the road, adding that only 20 tankers, including petrol and diesel, will ply towards Kargil and Ladakh and in next two days, trucks carrying Vegetables and other essential commodities will ply.

He said that only conductor and drivers will be allowed in these vehicles and they will be allowed to ply under security. He added that the medical staff deployed at Minimarg check-post will screen the drivers and conductors for COVID-19 symptoms.

Sources said that government had decided to open the highway in the month of March, but due to the threat of the novel coronavirus spread, the administration put the decision on hold.
