Srinagar: The Meteorological (MeT) department on Sunday said that light rainfall accompanied by gusty winds is expected across Jammu and Kashmir in the next three-four days.
MeT official CP Singh said that light rainfall and gusty winds are also expected in Leh, Ladakh and Jammu regions. He said the weather conditions would likely improve after four days.
On Saturday afternoon, a 17-year-old boy was killed after lightning struck him near his home in Brariangan area of Shangus in Anantnag district.
As per the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD), the hill states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarkhand are likely to witness thunderstorm accompanied with squall.
On Sunday, a squall and dust storm with a wind speed of up to 109 kmph barrelled through Delhi and neighbouring areas, affecting flight, rail and metro operations, uprooting trees, and leading to incidents of wall collapse.
Operations at the Delhi airport came to a halt due to the dust storm. At least 40 flights were diverted and more than 24 delayed, an official said.
Thunderstorm over the northern hill-states and its effect in the plains is due to a western disturbance, the IMD said.
A senior IMD official told PTI that the MeT department will add 30 Doppler radars in the next two-three years across India, of which several will be in the northeast and four in Jammu and Kashmir.
A Doppler radar is a tool to provide precise information about thunderstorms, dust storms, hailstorms, rainfall and wind patterns. With a radius of 250 km, such a radar helps in issuing forecasts 2-3 hours prior to severe weather events. The IMD is working on selecting locations. (PTI)
