A look back at IPL 2021

Before we talk about 2022, let us take a look back at IPL 2021. The Indian Premier League 2021 season was the 14th IPL season and was hosted in four Indian stadiums and three stadiums in the UAE. While several players withdrew from the tournament, the league remained exciting throughout, ultimately resulting in the Delhi Capitals standing on top, with 14 games played, 10 matches won, only four losses (the lowest out of any competing team), and 20 points overall.

While the Capitals had the best track record, they did not win the championship. The title, ultimately, went to the Chennai Super Kings, who won 9 out of the 14 matches, lost in five, and scored 18 points overall. The 2021 title was the Super Kings’ fourth IPL title, and the team is coming in strong for 2022.

Venues for IPL 2022

Now that we have taken a look back, let’s also look at the present. In the 15th iteration of the Indian Premier League, 10 of India’s best cricket teams will go head to head, starting March 26. Let us take a look at the venues where the matches will be played.

For the Indian Premier League 2022, the country has prepared four venues, the biggest of which is the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The stadium can hold up to 50,000 people. Apart from the DY, two of the three other stadiums are located in Mumbai (the Wankhede and the Brabourne Stadiums) and the last is in Pune (MCA International Stadium). Out of these three, Brabourne is the only one with a capacity lower than 30,000.

The change in format

The IPL 2022 will see a rather important shift in format. It will be the first season to feature 10 teams (previously the IPL had only featured 8). The new format will consist of 74 matches played among the 10 teams, who have already been divided into two groups. Each of the teams will face off against the other teams in their group twice, four of the teams in the other group once, and the last team twice.

The groups for the IPL 2022 are divided as follows. Group A consists of the Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and the Lucknow Super Giants, while Group B has the Chennai Super Kings, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Punjab Kings and the Gujarat Titans.

Punters, fans, and the athletes themselves are all expecting a high-adrenaline, heart-pumping season.
