The Union government today decided to extend the lockdown period by two more weeks in a bid to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, official sources said.

Government of India on Friday declared four districts in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir as Red Zone in a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19.

With 1993 new cases and 73 new fatalities in 24 hours, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country climbed to 35,043 on Friday morning, the Union Health Ministry said.

Principal Secretary, Planning, Development & Monitoring and Information, Rohit Kansal, who is also the J&K Government's spokesperson, today said that the COVID-19 pandemic spread rate has significantly slowed down in Jammu and Kashmir, even as there is no room for complacency and the situation demands extra watchfulness.

District administration Srinagar, owing to the ongoing lockdown in wake of Coronavirus, had decided to distribute thousands of kits among deserving people so that they do not stay hungry.
