PULWAMA — The residents of Dalipora area in southern Kashmir’s Pulwama town protested against the authorities for a ‘proposed’ Sumo Stand to be established in the area.

As per the protesting residents, the proposed move was against the interests of the locals. “This will be nothing more than a nuisance for local people,” an elderly man, Ghulam Mohammad, said.

Another local resident, Shaheena, said, “The proposed Sumo Stand will be kilometres away from the main road, which is not recommended and speaks of the vested interests behind the move.”

She went on to say that it is not in line with legal provisions as well to establish a Sumo Stand in irrigated agriculture or horticulture land.

“The creation of this Sumo Stand will also become a nuisance for womenfolk, who need to frequent to their agriculture fields several times a day,” the lady added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the creation of the Sumo Stand is one among three sanctioned by Housing and Urban Development Department for Pulwama district while the district administration is directly responsible for executing the same.

However, the resistance by the locals is giving a hard time to the authorities for going about the establishment of this Sumo Stand.

It will be interesting to see how the authorities resolve the ‘conflict of interest’ with the local people as frequent traffic jams irk the commuters in the town while the resistance to development of parking spaces like this Sumo Stand are a usual response.
