Pulwama journalists mark World Press Freedom Day with call for responsible journalism

PULWAMA — The Kamran Health and Development Welfare Society, in collaboration with The Kashmir Pulse news portal and Journalist Guild of Pulwama, organized a thought-provoking event in Pulwama on Saturday to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2025, bringing together journalists and civil society members to deliberate on the media’s critical role in shaping society.

The gathering saw senior and emerging journalists, members of the Journalist Guild of Pulwama, and civil society representatives engage in discussions on ethical reporting, media challenges, and the need for responsible journalism.

Ghulam Hassan Talib, former KAS officer and chief guest, stressed the importance of addressing pressing social issues like drug abuse and public grievances through factual and impactful reporting.

Fayaz Ahmad Wani, President of the Traders Federation Pulwama, praised the media’s role in raising awareness about social evils and acting as a bridge between the public and authorities. “The media not only informs but also empowers citizens by highlighting issues that demand urgent action,” he said, urging journalists to continue their efforts in exposing malpractices while maintaining credibility.

The event took a solemn turn as participants observed a minute of silence for the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local guide. The tragic incident served as a reminder of the media’s responsibility in reporting such events with sensitivity.

Journalists, including prominent figures like Javed Sofi, highlighted the growing challenges in the profession—from misinformation and sensationalism to financial instability and safety concerns. Calls were made for more structured support from authorities, with demands for the J&K Department of Information and Public Relations to organize regular workshops and training sessions for journalists.

“Media today faces unprecedented challenges, but with the right guidance and institutional support, we can uphold truth without compromising ethics,” said Javed Sofi.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to truthful, impactful journalism, reinforcing the belief that a free yet responsible press remains the cornerstone of a progressive society.

“Press freedom is not just about speaking truth to power—it’s about doing so with responsibility,” remarked one attendee, encapsulating the day’s resounding message.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah lauded the role of journalists in upholding democratic values by “speaking truth to power.”

In a statement recognizing the vital contribution of the press, Abdullah emphasized the importance of safeguarding media freedom not just in rhetoric but through tangible actions.

“Free press is the cornerstone of a vibrant democracy. We must protect it, not just in words, but in action,” he said.

Taking to social media platform X, the National Conference leader posted, “On World Press Freedom Day, we honour the courage and commitment of journalists who speak truth to power. We must protect it, not just in words, but in action.”
