SRINAGAR — Workers employed by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) have alleged lack of support from the department.

Workers in Mehjoor Nagar area of the city complained that they were not provided with any protective gears, in view of the spread of COVID-19 infection.

“We are working with SMC on ‘dustbin fee’ and our salaries are paid from the fee itself after collection of the same from the local residents,” one of the workers, Farooq Shah said, adding, “We leave at 7 AM to work but without masks and gloves, we are at a great risk of being infected by Coronavirus.”

45 fresh COVID-19 cases, one death reported in J&K

When asked about the complaint, the concerned Ward Officer, Shabir Akhoon said that they have already provided masks, gloves and hand sanitizers to the workers. He, however, said, “We provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to only those workers who work in red zones of the city.”
