INDIA bloc alleges electoral roll irregularities, plans campaign at Ramlila Maidan
The Joint Press Conference under the “Save Democracy Week” & “Vote Bachao‑Desh Bachao” campaign, organized by the Indian National Congress in coordination with INDIA Bloc partners, was held at the Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Headquarters, Srinagar

SRINAGAR — The INDIA bloc on Sunday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of undermining democratic institutions and raised concerns over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls, demanding accountability from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, bloc members alleged that the deletion of names from electoral rolls and a lack of transparency in electoral processes had raised serious questions about the credibility of elections, according to the news agency KNS.

The speakers said the right to vote was a fundamental pillar of democracy and alleged that the reported deletion of millions of voters’ names had deprived eligible citizens of their democratic rights.

They called for the restoration of deleted names and greater transparency in the preparation and revision of electoral rolls.

Referring to elections held in West Bengal, Haryana and Maharashtra, the opposition leaders questioned the transparency of the electoral process and called for a review of the polls, arguing that public confidence in democratic institutions must be protected.

The INDIA bloc members also criticised Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over what they described as his failure to adequately address concerns raised by opposition parties. They questioned the BJP’s defence of the Election Commission leadership and demanded a public explanation of the allegations.

“The right to vote cannot be left to the discretion of any political party. Every eligible citizen must be allowed to exercise this right freely and fairly,” the speakers said, stressing the need to safeguard constitutional principles and electoral integrity.

The leaders said the issue had extended beyond the Congress and become a broader concern for opposition parties and citizens who believe transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining public trust in democratic institutions.

Calling for wider public mobilisation, the speakers said the campaign against alleged electoral irregularities would be intensified and announced plans to take the movement to Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi.

The INDIA bloc members maintained that the Election Commission must address the allegations transparently and take appropriate steps to ensure that every eligible voter’s name is included in the electoral rolls.
