Semester system devastating for students, says Prof Tariq Ashai

SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir College Teachers Association’s President, Professor Tariq Ashai has expressed serious concern over the unprecedented delay in the completion of the degrees at the undergraduate level.

In a statement, he said that the present semester system in degree colleges of the Kashmir division is proving to be a biggest impediment in completion of the degrees, thus depriving the students of the opportunities to pursue higher education.

He said that the semester system in Kashmir division has completely failed due to the unfavourable climatic conditions and other unavoidable circumstances as a result of which there is increase in the dropout rate.

He added that the lack of interest among the student community could have far reaching consequences.

Prof Ashai said that CTA has raised this issue at umpteen times, on the basis of feedback from various stakeholders and recommended that present semester system be either replaced by the annual system or two semesters be clubbed and examination conducted in the month of November-December.
