Jammu: The authorities in the sensitive border town of Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir enforced strict curfew restrictions second day Friday following communal clashes Wednesday evening.
Rajouri Deputy Commissioner G.A. Khwaja told media persons Friday that 20 people have been arrested for trying to “ignite communal tension in the town”.
He said the authorities were strictly enforcing the curfew and “no one is being allowed to violate the restrictions”.
Officials termed the situation as “still tense but not out of control”.
According to Khwaja, the civil administration would be reviewing the situation later in the day and “then see if relaxation in curfew is advisable”.
Curfew was imposed Wednesday night as authorities feared a flare-up after a remark Monday by Praveen Togadia, international general secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, triggered communal tensions in the town.
The remark was interpreted as “anti-Muslim” by community leaders, who took out protest marches in Rajouri.
Hindus retaliated with counter protests Wednesday. Matters worsened Wednesday evening when a Hindu procession was stoned.
The opposition parties in the state’s legislature, which is in session, also demanded strict action against Togadia for inflaming communal tensions.
