Gunfight breaks out in Shopian’s Kanigam village

SHOPIAN — An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Kanigam village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Thursday morning.

An official said that a joint team of Police, Army’s 44 RR and CRPF launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

As per the officials, four newly recruited Al-Badr militants are believed to be trapped in the area.

A senior police officer said that efforts are underway to make them surrender. “We have brought their families and are trying to persuade them to surrender,” the officer said.

“Gunfight has started now as militants turned down the surrender offer and opened fire and lobbed a grenade on joint search party,” the police officer said.
